Carol and I were highschool pen pals.  We both had  signed up on a penpal club.
I lost contact with her in 1965.  I thought she had a brother Wayne & a best friend Melody M.  They were my penpals also.
We shared about our lives and loves.  Those were the  good times.  Miss you Carol.  I was her Minnesota pen pal Ginger.

Karen Diane Dieguez (Tosi)

June 7th, 1942 - July 13th, 2006

Karen and I met in junior high school.  We spent lots and lots of time together when we were kids.  Karen and her parents made a difference in my life.
Karen and I were such opposites yet managed to remain lifelong friends.  She was friendly and outgoing.  I was very quiet and really shy.  Karen was a dare devil, and I was a really big wimp.  (She was always trying to talk me into things, and I was always trying to talk her out of them.)  She was athletic, and I could barely ride a bike.  But we clicked.  We were different yet perhaps had the same soul, for we both became elementary teachers.  We both taught the same grades.
When I think of Karen now I remember her smile.  She always smiled.  I remember she loved my mom’s homemade bread and the exotic Italian dishes my mom fixed - recipes my mom brought from Italy.  I remember I helped her get through geometry.  (She hated math.  I loved it.) I remember how much she loved dogs.  Her romance with dogs began as a child and lasted until her death.  I remember she loved to sing.  Karen was in our high school choir and a little singing group.  But what I remember most of all is that Karen liked everyone.  She didn’t have a prejudiced bone in her body.
We went our separate ways after high school.  Lots of miles and many years separated us for a long time.  We had long conversations when her mother died, when her father died and after she attended the 45th reunion.  It was during those telephone visits that we came to know each other as teachers. I can guess Karen taught her students to love books and reading.  Surely she and her students sang together.  And I know they played together.  How lucky all those children were to have such a talented person as a teacher.
Karen died of complications following heart surgery.  She left behind three daughters, a brother, six grandchildren, four dogs and many, many friends.

Phil, you were my very, very good friend in HS and after.  We hitchhiked to California together in '63, met up again in Germany in '67 when we were both in the Army.  I stood up for you at your weddding there to Gerri, who later did you bad.  That and Vietnam had a major effect on you.

I remember the helicopter rides in the Huey, trying to stay warm in TX in March, the rattlesnake roundup in Sweetwater, smoking dope with you in '99.  I loved you, man.  God bless and rest in peace.  You deserve it.

Phillip ("Phil") Gilbert was born on May 29, 1942, in Steubenville, Ohio and passed away on Sunday, March 30, 2008, after a long illness. Phil was a resident of Fairview, Tennessee, at the time of his passing. Phil traveled around the country and had lived for some lengths of time, in addition to Ohio and Tennessee, South Jersey and Philadelphia, Texas, and Florida, all of which his friends and family adored him for, even if it left others of us without his much missed presence. Phil served his country as a Helicopter Pilot in the Vietnam War in the United States Army. Phil was married for a time, which was a very deep-felt commitment to him. Phil obtained a degree in Business Administration and later went on to become an Accountant. Phil was an avid reader, deeply spiritual, with an expansive mind and heart for knowledge applied to evolving as a spiritual being and as a human being. Phil was hilarious, radiating warmth, even giggly warmth, down to earth, a kind and intelligent man. Phil was deeply loved by his friends and his family. Phil is gone from this earth but he is not and shall not ever be forgotten by those who love him. Phil, while you always said there was no reason to say anything when you leave, even the room, Love deserves words, because Love is the only attachment there is. Shalom and Namaste.

James Melville Hill, born in Steubenville, Ohio on January 27, 1942, passed from this earth on April 14th, 2015 in Tuscan , Arizona to reunite with his mother, father and brother who went before him. He is dearly loved and sadly missed by his wife of 51 years, Linda, his daughter, Erin (Del), his son, Mike (Kristin), sister and brother-in-law (Roberta and John Neel). Jim's beloved grandsons, Josh, Brandon, Tyler and Jason will remember him always as their loving Papa. They brought him constant joy and will grow up to be good men like him. He leaves behind his nieces, nephews, and dear friends with so many memories of a gentle and caring man. He is missed, too, by his little mutt, Sunny, who picked Jim out at the dog shelter. She made him laugh everyday even though illness was ravaging his body. Jim was the perfect example of a good life well lived. We, his family, wish to thank him for teaching us life's lessons and setting a wonderful example for us to follow.

From Big Red Class of 1960 on February 1st, 2020

Patricia Ann Lacko, 73, beloved mother, grandmother, sister and friend, died peacefully on September 20, 2016, at her daughter’s home in Castle Pines, CO. She was surrounded by her daughters, Judi Lacko Zallaps and Jodi Dorris.

Patti was born on September 28, 1942, in Steubenville, OH, to the late Edgar Paul Griffin and Virginia Belle McCauley Griffin.

Patti graduated from Big Red High School, where she was on the yearbook and newspaper staffs, pep club and Hi Y. Her yearbook described her in this way: “She loves to dance, she loves to sing, she loves to do most anything!” In school Patti was described as always knowing the latest dances. She knew and was liked by everyone. Patti always had a very positive outlook, stayed away from gossip and was wise and generous with her time and friendship.

Patti married Joseph Michael Lacko III on May 30, 1964, in Upland, CA, where they began their family. Wendy was born in February 1965 with identical twins Judi and Jodi following shortly thereafter in September 1966. As a result of their growing family, they moved back to OH to be closer to family. Their family continued to expand when Patti gave birth to Elizabeth Belle Lacko (deceased) in December 1973.

Due to her husband’s asthma, the family moved to Steamboat Springs, CO, where Patti worked as a sales associate for many years at Beckett Drug and WalMart. Following her certification as a pharmacy technician, she worked in the pharmacy at Safeway for nine years prior to retiring.

Patti’s true joy in life were her children and grandchildren, and playing cards and board games. Her children meant everything to her; she was fiercely devoted to them and supported them in their athletics, academics, careers and business ventures.

Patti was very well liked, warm, personable and easy to talk to, and she always had a smile and/or compliment to offer. She also loved telling jokes. She had many lifelong friends that she kept in touch with until she passed.

She was known as a great poker player and spent many days and evenings playing games with family and friends. Patti also loved music and loved to sing and dance. She also was an avid football fan and thoroughly enjoyed watching the Denver Broncos and the Ohio State University Buckeyes.

Patti is survived by her sister, Judy (Babe) Woodward of Crown Point, IN; daughters, Wendy Lacko of Oak Creek, CO, Judi (Jeff) Zallaps of Castle Pines, CO, Jodi (Eric) Dorris of Steamboat Springs, CO; grandchildren, Eliza Lacko and Malia Graham (Wendy), Jackson and Sophia Zallaps and Tate and Quinn Dorris; three nephews and one niece; and a number of other relatives and close friends.

It was an honor and a pleasure to serve on the Big Red 55th Reunion Committee. I had served on other committees, but this one was rather special. We planned the entire reunion in 3 meetings, all of them conducted online. We decided to have an optional day, due to Big Red's football season opening on a Thursday night. Patty decided that she would have a party in her room after the game. Initially, we gauged the interest and decided that no room would be big enough, and the planning of a truly remarkable Thursday began. From Naples at late lunch to DiCarlos pizza and karaoke in the The Holy Trinity Event Hall after the game. We had a wonderful day, and Patty started the ball rolling. She was a delight to work with on the committee. Her energy  moved us forward.....We love you Patty, and we miss you very much.  I can only imagine the reunions ahead......when we meet again.....God bless you always.

If you were having a down day, Ron was the next person that you needed to see. He was a great listener, and he would carefully listen to your reason for being down. Ron must have had a large family, because someone in his family had experienced what you were now experiencing. After sharing that, he made you feel like everything would be good...and so it was. At one of he reunions, he mentioned that he and his wife were going to Florida and might be coming back our way in Virginia. They visited us on the way back, and we had a wonderful dinner and an evening of great conversation. I never saw him after that. Ron, we miss you, and we look forward to the day when we see you again. God bless you..

From Jim Rayl on June 28th, 2015
Image It’s hard to know where to start in thinking about Dick.  Dick Means, Chuck Griesinger and I were best friends and virtually inseparable growing up.  We all lived only a few houses from each other and were constant playmates.  Virginia Maxwell (Staib) mentioned some of the fun things we did.  As we grew up we did a lot of crazy things together.  I remember one time when Dick and I rode our bikes up route 7 from Steubenville to Toronto to visit my sister.  I would have had a stroke if one of my kids did that.

When we got in high school and Dick could drive we did some even crazier things.  I remember some pretty wild times in his father’s “Olds 98” and the time his uncle let him drive us around in his shiny, new, yellow Lincoln convertible.  At the time, we really thought that was a big deal.

In High School Dick was extremely popular.  With his good looks and charm he was a real hit with the ladies.  I can’t remember how many girls wanted me to try and “fix them up” with Dick since they knew I was one of his best friends.

After high school Dick went to work in the steel mills like his father and mine.  I couldn’t get a job in the mill so I moved to Washington D.C. and ultimately Oklahoma.  I remember seeing Dick at the Holiday Inn that Marian Fagerstom (Haines) mentioned.  I was surprised that Dick wasn’t coming to the actual reunion.  I still don’t understand why.  I would have loved to have spent more time with him.

I tried to find out what year Dick passed but I didn’t have any luck.  But the tragedy of his passing will be with me forever.  As it turned out, I was passing through Steubenville on my way to Oklahoma from having visited relatives in West Virginia.  I hadn’t planned it, but I thought I would stop and see if I could make contact with Dick.  I didn’t get any response by phone and I even went out to his house but no one was home.  So I continued my journey to Oklahoma.  Shortly after I got home I found out from Chuck (I believe) that Dick had passed from cancer just a couple of days before my attempt to see him.  I was heartbroken that I never even knew he was ill because I would have been there in a heartbeat to see him before he passed.

I still think about Dick amazingly often.  He will always remain a “best friend” and I’m sure Chuck feels the same way.  I’m know Chuck will join me at the reunion in having a special toast to Dick.  He is missed terribly but definitely not forgotten.  We love you Dick.

From Virginia Maxwell Staib on August 11th, 2010
Oh Dick, you were such a big part of the Kendall Avenue "crew"  On our "kids and dogs" street you and Chuck, Jim, and I were the same age group and hide-and-seek, red rover, and bouncing balls against Mr. Crosley's garage door were parts of all of our lives.  Sledding down our challenging street and riding bicycles up that hill were two of the fun challenges of life.  Teachers at Roosevelt said you had the most innocent eyes they had ever seen - the unspoken part was that you were also one of the mischevious kids.  Miss Halley nailed you for shooting spitwads (but you didn't give me away as the person wadding up the little pieces of paper for you <smile>) By the time we were all in high school each of us seemed to take different paths and those paths diverged but you and Chuck and Jim and me will always be the kids of Kendall and as long as we remember them those times will never end.  It is said that as long as someone remembers you life does not end.   I remember

From marian fagerstrom on August 1st, 2010
I couldn't let this go without a comment.  In the early years, at Roosevelt Elem. we were on opposing Indian tribes.  We had tomato wars in the woods at the end of Oak Grove ave.  The fiendship progressed far beyond graduation.  I last saw Dick at our 30th reunion.  He came to the Holiday Inn (now the University Inn), and we sat and talkwd for a couple of hours about how our lives had tuned out.  He was not satisfied with his.  I am so sorry for that, because mhe was a true friend.

He attended the United States Naval Academy and received his Chemical Engineering Degree from the University of Houston – Cullen College of Engineering. He started working at Petro-Tex and continued there under different owners and eventually retired early from Texas Petrochemical.

Robert and Vicky had a whirlwind courtship, surely guided by the angels. Robert was in Houston on business, and Vicky was returning to Houston from Phoenix. They met and he returned to Ohio. Robert and Vicky got engaged over the phone, and Robert returned to Houston a couple weeks later. After failing to settle on wedding plans, they eloped two months later and the marriage lasted 50 years!

Robert was a quiet, stoic man who enjoyed sailing, fishing and woodworking. But more than anything he was an avid reader. Throughout his retired years he was never seen without a book in his hands…as long as he could find his glasses.

Robert Schoppe was preceded in death by: Son- Gregory Alan Schoppe, Parents- Robert William Schoppe and Thelma Elnora Bronson.

He is survived by: Wife- Vicky (Politte) Schoppe, Daughter- Paige (Thomas) Gallegos, Brother- Richard August (Christine) Schoppe and Darrell Lee (Mary Teresa) Schoppe.

Obituary

" God's Will Is What Pleases Me"
No matter what happens, no matter what goes wrong,
God's will shall be done, God's will shall be done.
I want you to realize, I want you to see,
God's will is what pleases me.
God's will is what matters.  God's will is what's to be.
If your life or my life is ever to be free.
We can fight it and suffer or just let it be,
for God's will is what pleases me.
There are times that we think that we may know more.
For me that was years ago, before he opened the door.
Now everything's clearer and more plain to see.
God's will is what pleases me.
His grace flows through us when "his" will is done.
Someday we will see "Him", God's precious Son.
Then we will know that always was to be.
God's will is what pleases me.

From Bill Geiger on January 3rd, 2020
As a  freshman at Big Red, I was new to the town and to the school.  We moved to Steubenville about a month before school started.  I knew nobody, and that made my transition to this new world rather difficult.  Bill took me under his wing midway through that freshman year, and I never looked back. From that point on, Steubenville became my home, and Big Red was my school. Thanks Bill for being my friend.  God bless you....
